Reading and Phonics in our school

At Tweedmouth Prior Park First School we consider reading is the most important thing that a child can learn in our school. It is the key that opens all other curriculum areas. We use the Read Write Inc scheme in Reception and Key Stage 1. In Key Stage 2 our core scheme is Rising Stars Reading Planet.

At Tweedmouth Prior Park First School we use the Read Write Inc. phonics programme, with related reading books and other Read Write Inc. resources to support our phonics lessons.

We use the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme to introduce reading and spelling phonetically regular words from the earliest days in Nursery and Reception and we also follow Read Write Inc. guidance for letter formation during the Foundation Stage.

In Reception and Key Stage 1 children have a daily lesson following the Read Write Inc programme. Children are assessed and grouped as soon so that they are receiving the correct input to allow them to make the best possible progress.

Children continue to follow the RWI phonics programme in Year One and Year Two where it moves in to a more spelling based programme once the children have reached a certain level of phonic knowledge.  This approach continues in Key Stage 2.

In Key Stage 2 staff  hear children read during Guided Reading sessions.

Every child will read twice a week and will take home the book they are reading at school to practice at home. Our core scheme is Rising Stars Reading Planet. These books will challenge the children with new vocabulary and words as well as familiar words too. We also encourage children to read familiar books, in order to improve the pace and fluency with which they read.

At all times children are encouraged to be independent. This in turn raises a child’s self esteem which gives them the confidence to read and write independently.
